Coffman pulls away from rest of Colorado GOP on immigration

U.S. Rep. Mike Coffman

U.S. Rep. Mike Coffman (AP file photo)

WASHINGTON ? Two of Colorado's most prominent Republicans pushed varying messages Tuesday on how to achieve comprehensive immigration reform to a House subcommittee ? a rift that exemplifies the uphill battle the issue has in getting accomplished before the end of the year.

Rep. Cory Gardner, a Republican from Yuma, said that while he believed so-called DREAMers ? young people brought to the United States as children by undocumented parents ? should be afforded a path to citizenship eventually, he didn't want to enact new legislation without proven border and interior security first.

"We have to focus on border security first and enforcement of the law and then we can move onto questions about citizenship," he said, a few minutes before testifying before a packed subcommittee hearing under the House Judiciary Committee. "There is no bill right now so let's start with the border and then go from there."

Rep. Mike Coffman, a Republican from Aurora, had a softer view Tuesday ? an opinion he acknowledges has evolved because his newly redrawn district is now 20 percent Latino.

Coffman said he believes comprehensive immigration reform ? increased border security and a provisional citizenship status for the millions of undocumented people living in the United States now ? needs to happen mostly simultaneously.

Then, when it has been proven the border is secure, a pathway to apply for legal citizenship should be opened for all undocumented people, he said.

As for the DREAMers, Coffman said he believed border security and the pathway to legal status should happen at the same time. In his formal statement to the subcommittee Tuesday, he promoted his own legislation that would allow DREAMers become citizens if they join the military.

Coffman's sentiment contradicts earlier statements he has made against the DREAM Act and a pathway to citizenship for undocumented adults. It also contradicts his vote last month to defund President Barack Obama's executive order allowing DREAMers to apply for temporary work permits.

"Every congressman and congresswoman always, I think, feels an attachment to their constituents and quite frankly my constituents have dramatically changed," he said, in an interview after the hearing. "In my prior district, the only immigration problems I dealt with were kids going overseas who needed a visa. ... It's very different now. I gotta tell you it really breaks my heart to sit down with some of these people and they tell me what their day-to-day lives are like. I admit I've been moved by some of those stories."

Coffman and Gardner's high-profile testimonies Tuesday come at a critical time for the U.S. House of Representatives as its leadership tries to parse diverging opinions within the chamber on how to tackle immigration reform.

The U.S. Senate last month passed a comprehensive package that calls for an overhaul of the nation's visa system, a pathway to citizenship for the majority of undocumented people living and working in the United States, and an expedited path for DREAMers to become legal residents.

"It's encouraging to see the House have this discussion," said Sen. Michael Bennet, a Democratic architect of the Senate's legislation. "It's time to pass an immigration bill for our economy and for our communities. The DREAM Act is an important element to fixing the system."

Though the Senate bill passed 68-32 with bipartisan support, the Republican-controlled House rejected the deal. Most GOP members ? including Gardner, Rep. Scott Tipton and Rep. Doug Lamborn ? say they prefer to focus on border security before having any conversations about a pathway to citizenship for people living in the United States illegally.

President Obama said in a series of interviews with Spanish language television stations last week ? including Telemundo Denver ? that he didn't believe in tackling immigration reform in a piecemeal fashion.

"The danger of doing it in pieces is that a lot of groups want different things. And you know, there's a tendency I think to put off the hard stuff until the end. And if you've eaten your dessert before you've eaten your meal, at least with my children, sometimes they don't end up eating their vegetables," the president said to a Denver reporter in a one-on-one interview. "So we ? we ? we need to, I think, do this as a complete package. You know ... we've been working on this for years now, everybody knows what the debates are. It's time for us to ? stop worrying about politics, and worry about doing the right thing for the country."

The White House and House Republicans are in agreement on one thing: No one believes immigration reform will be accomplished before the five-week August recess.

Sony Santa Monica Confirms ?No New Content Planned? for PlayStation All-Stars, Possible Journey/Gravity Rush Stage Shown Off

playstationallstarsleak8

Update: Sony Santa Monica sent out another video.

Sony Santa Monica answered a lot of important questions over the weekend, which started with Just Tank, Community Strategist, offering up a statement as to what happened with Dart possibly coming to PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale as DLC:

PlayStation All-Stars Fans,

Thank you for your continued support of PlayStation All-Stars and for keeping the community thriving. At this time we have no plans to release new content for PlayStation All-Stars.

While we considered many characters during development and even created concept art for a number of characters and environments that were being explored during the game?s development phase, including Dart, we were not able to incorporate all of them into the final game. We will continue to be committed to supporting the PlayStation All-Stars online community through online match-making and will ensure server stability.

We appreciate all of your support and passion for PlayStation All-Stars. Our hats off to the team at SuperBot for creating an incredible fighting game, and to you for keeping the online mayhem running strong.

Thank you,

Sony Santa Monica

The Sony Santa Monica Twitter account also got in on the Dart action, saying, ?it was only ever a piece of concept art and never anything planned further after a short discovery.? They then followed this up by plainly stating on the topic of PlayStation All-Stars in general, ?we have no new content planned at this time.?

After someone replied to the Dart tweet with ?you let us down again the same way you [did] with Fat Princess and Starhawk by not supporting it,? SSM explained, ?we are maintaining servers for Starhawk and also just helped the largest clan.? Based on that comment, it doesn?t seem like Starhawk will join MAG, SOCOM 4, and SOCOM Confrontation?in the land of shut off servers this January.

Sticking with PlayStation All-Stars, Ky Bui, Environment Artist at SuperBot, seemed to leak a possible Journey/Gravity Rush stage, with Elton Gamez, Creative Director on PS All-Stars, seeming to do the same with a different title screen (both unconfirmed and now deleted, via PSE 1, 2):

Jumping ahead to today, Sony Santa Monica teased this video for God of War: Ascension multiplayer, while re-affirming that the next large map will be free to everyone, and Gauntlets will be paid, except for those who have the Season Pass.

Are you disappointed to hear that we won?t be getting any new PlayStation All-Stars content? Let us know in the comments below.

ST PAUL POLICE LAWSUITS

St. Paul pays $1M in 2012 for police lawsuits

(Information in the following story is from: St. Paul Pioneer Press, http://www.twincities.com)

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) ? The city of St. Paul paid about $1 million in total costs for lawsuits alleging police misconduct last year.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that's the largest amount in at least 17 years.

Of the eight lawsuits settled in 2012, half the incidents occurred during Chief Thomas Smith's tenure. The other half were during John Harrington's time as chief. His six-year term started in 2004.

City Attorney Sara Grewing says larger conclusions shouldn't be drawn from the recent cases because the decision to settle is based on what's in the best financial interest of the city.

President of the St. Paul NAACP, Jeff Martin, says an officer who costs the city and taxpayers this sort of money should be held to a higher standard.

STABBING DEATH-DULUTH

Minn. teen to be tried as adult in veteran's death

DULUTH, Minn. (AP) ? A Duluth teen charged with killing a United States Army veteran who suffered more than 50 wounds to his head, face, neck and back will be tried as an adult.

Enrique "Ricky" Robert Giner IV had been charged in a juvenile delinquency petition with second-degree murder in the March slaying of 27-year-old Bryan Alan Starnes in Duluth. He was 17 at the time. Giner turned 18 on July 7th.

The Duluth News Tribune reports a judge accepted Giner's waiver into adult court and ordered he be moved from Arrowhead Juvenile Center to the St. Louis County Jail. He will be charged with the same crime in an adult criminal complaint.

Starnes was an Army veteran who served a tour of duty in Afghanistan.

PHOTOGRAPHY STORE-HOMICIDES

Trial to start for Minn. man in double homicide

(Information in the following story is from: La Crosse Tribune, http://www.lacrossetribune.com)

LA CROSSE, Wis. (AP) ? The trial for a Minnesota man accused of killing a La Crosse photography store owner and his son last September is set to begin this week.

Prosecutors are expected to argue that outstanding debt from a prior felony case drove Jeffrey Lepsch, a hobby photographer, to rob May's Photo on September 15th and shoot 56-year-old Paul Petras and his 19-year-old son A.J.

The La Crosse Tribune reports jury selection is set for Tuesday and Lepsch's trial is expected to last nine days.

His three public defenders have not revealed the defense.

The 40-year-old from Dakota, Minnesota is charged in La Crosse County with two counts of first-degree intentional homicide, armed robbery with use of force and possession of a firearm.

Lepsch remains jailed on a $2 million cash bond.

FRAC SAND DEMAND

Demand for frac sand falls in Wis., Minn.

(Information in the following story is from: Winona Daily News, http://www.winonadailynews.com)

WINONA, Minn. (AP) ? Short-term demand for frac sand in western Wisconsin and eastern Minnesota has fallen because there's more sand available than the industry currently needs.

The Winona Daily News reports demand had exploded several years ago, spurring companies to open mines and processing facilities and ship across the country for fracking operations.

Paul van Eijl works on purchasing land for Superior Sand Systems in the region. He says until demand increases the company's new facility in Wabasha, permitted in December 2012, will likely remain idle.

The Freedonia Group, a market research organization, estimates that the annual demand for silica sand will increase by at least 4.8 percent every year at least until 2016.

Winona County planning and environmental services director Jason Gilman says he suspects the stabilization is only temporary.

MINNESOTA WATERFOWL

Minnesota breeding duck population rises

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) ? Despite a record late ice-out, spring waterfowl surveys show that Minnesota's breeding duck population has improved from last year.

The Department of Natural Resources estimates the state's breeding duck population at 683,000 compared with 469,000 last year. This year's estimate is 10 percent above the long-term average.

This year's Canada goose population is estimated at 250,000, considerably less than last year's 416,000. The DNR says cold temperatures and April snowfall combined with a late ice-out reduced nesting success. But DNR wildlife section chief Paul Telander says the goose population remains higher than managers want it to be.

So Minnesota will hold its first-ever August Canada goose season from August 10th through 25th in a special zone in west-central Minnesota.

The DNR will announce this fall's waterfowl hunting regulations later this summer.

David Cameron: Firms Like Google Need To Do More To Block 'Depraved and Disgusting' Search Terms

attached image

AP

David Cameron said on the BBC?s Andrew Marr show that search engines such as Google need to do more to block results for ?depraved and disgusting? searches for child abuse.

Cameron said: "I think it's wrong that they should get results and we need to have very, very strong conversations with those companies about saying 'No, you shouldn't provide results for some terms that are so depraved and disgusting'.

"I think there's going to be a big argument there, and if we don't get what we need we'll have to look at legislation."

The discussion today comes ahead of a speech the Prime Minister is expected to make tomorrow, which will put forward a plan by the government, including having a ?blacklist? of words provided to search engines by the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre.

Anyone searching for terms on this list will be made to view a webpage warning them of the consequences of their actions, which could include losing their job and access to their children, according to a snippet of the speech seen by the BBC.

Google says that when child abuse images are found, it acts to remove them.

Uganda: Food Security - Uganda Looks to Chinese Millet

After 18 months of trials on Foxtail millet growth in Uganda, the ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) plans to roll out the hybrid variety to farmers later this year.

The Observer has learnt that a team of Ugandan and Chinese researchers reported successful results from their trials conducted at Mukono Zonal Agricultural Research Institute.

"It's not drought-resistant but tolerant to harsh dry conditions if you provide enough moisture for only two months," says Peter Lusembo, the director of the institute and leader of the local research team on Foxtail millet.

According to researchers, Foxtail millet yields up to 2.5 tonnes per hectare, compared to 1.5 tonnes for local millet varieties. If given maximum moisture (water) for two months, Foxtail millet is ready for harvest in three months, meaning farmers can grow it four times a year. Local millet varieties take up to 123 days (four months).

A bending tip that bears the grains makes it difficult for birds to eat Foxtail millet - another advantage over local varieties. Chinese expert Wei Kun Wu, attached to Mukono Zonal Agricultural Research Institute, says Foxtail millet doesn't require costly artificial fertilisers.

"Only manure is needed, which every Ugandan farmer should be able to provide," Wu explains.

Dr Okaasai Opolot, the director for crops in the ministry of Agriculture, says Foxtail millet has become one of Uganda's "short-term answers" to food insecurity. The ministry recently procured 50 kilogrammes of Foxtail millet seed from China as the first step in a bid to roll it out countrywide.

According to Opolot, once the consignment, which he expects before the end of this year, is delivered, the ministry will send it to different regions to study the changes in different ecological situations.

Apart from boosting Uganda's food security, Opolot says Foxtail millet has high starch content, which the Chinese want to import if local farmers can produce as much. Opolot adds that Foxtail millet waste (husks) can be used to make animal feeds, and it also has been successfully tested as ideal for making local brew, commonly known as malwa/ajon.

During a recent tour of the research project at the Mukono-based institute, the Chinese Ambassador to Uganda, Zhao Yali, said Foxtail millet made highly nutritious porridge.

"If cooked the Chinese way (grains cooked in water and no sugar), you get very good porridge highly recommended for new mothers and the whole family. It's commonly taken at breakfast and after dinner in Beijing," the Chinese diplomat explained.

As part of the South-South Cooperation (SSC), a United Nations-initiated platform for developing nations to exchange resources, technology, and knowledge amongst themselves, Chinese experts were posted to the Mukono institute to work with Ugandans to develop the agronomy and utilisation of Foxtail millet.

The joint project, which includes others in Masindi (maize) and Kabale (apples), is funded to a tune of $1.5m under the SSC partnership with the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation, the Chinese and Uganda governments.

"Let the Ugandan farmers access some of these (Chinese) varieties so that we can expand this method of using improved seeds to promote food security," Ambassador Zhao said.

However, officials on an assessment trip recently learnt that a communication barrier between Chinese experts and Ugandan researchers slows the pace of work. Most of the Chinese experts barely speak English, and very few Ugandans understand or speak Chinese.

But Opolot remains optimistic.

"They are involved in practical research trials, not theories so they can explain and demonstrate a process to their counterparts," Opolot says, admitting that work takes more time, though.

He adds that Chinese experts will help MAAIF change the "attitudes of our young researchers" with their hands-on approach.

Paranormal Events Surrounded George Washington Father of our Country

Few people realize that the future of a fledgling nation called America relied upon remarkable supernatural events.

In the bitterly frozen winter of 1777 as the future of the United States hung in the balance, General George Washington, the father of our nation, pondered his dwindling options. His 12,000 man Continental Army was ill equipped, in rags, and starving. His staff officers were contemplating impending surrender. He had just received news that a much needed shipment of supply wagons had probably been turned back by Congress. Valley Forge was the scene of one of the most desperate moments of the American Revolution.

The darkest hour

General Washington sat in a two story house being used as the headquarters for the Continental Army and read the bitter message delivered by a courier horseman, accompanied by Colonel Danforth and French Commander Lafayette, who was suffering from a leg wound, news of a failed shipment did not set well. The war had come to its most desperate juncture. Morale of his beleaguered soldiers was at an all-time low. Would the new nation survive as Washington begged Congress for more appropriations to fund the war effort against the British? Each month the Continental Army was losing 500 men to sickness and exposure. A grim realization was emerging.

An uncanny moment alone

Washington left his command quarters to step out into the cold night and, followed by his horse, kneel down on a place in the snow with his hands clasped together. He prayed to God asking if he was fit to make a decision that affected so many lives. Then he asked the Lord for his help. Suddenly before him on the frozen snow covered ground he saw strange images that made him sweep the snow with his hand in astonishment. He then noticed a presence and the voice of someone standing very near. George Washington looked up in surprise to see an Indian Chief who had opposed him along with the French in a battle of the past.

Valor in battle

At the battle Monongahela River under the command of British General Braddock, a deadly skirmish that occurred from a combined Indian and French ambush decimated the ranks of the English. In the battle the young officer George Washington had two horses shot out from underneath him as British soldiers fell and horse mounted officers were picked off by Indian sharpshooters. Yet, with more than fifteen shots fired at Washington as he tried to re-assemble his troops, the enemy failed to bring him down. ?General Braddock, Washington?s superior officer was killed as were reported numbers of soldiers as high as 800 in the course of the surprise attack.

Later it was found that there were four holes in Washington?s uniform coat, and two holes in his hat. In over 200 battles that he participated in Washington was never even scathed!

Former enemy becomes an ally

The Indian Chief there at the battle of Monongahela in 1755 had ordered his rifleman to take out Washington then admitted he had finally ordered his braves to cease fire as this man was being protected by the Great Spirit and was not destined to be die by any bullet. In view of the number of engagements that Washington had fought in, it would seem that this claim was true. The Indian Chief told the discouraged General Washington that he would succeed, that the general of the rag tag Continental Army would become a much remembered leader of a great empire that was to come. Now he inexplicably stood face to face with General Washington in the bitter cold of the night. Suddenly a noise startled Washington and he turned to see what had happened.

No trace is left

The Chief had vanished, but even stranger was the untouched snow that Washington noticed where the Native American chief had stood. There were no footprints! George Washington felt the icy cold ground where the Indian had been in disbelief! He returned to his command quarters bewildered. The general ordered a meeting with his staff officers at 9 o?clock that night as he strode into his office. As officers mumbled among themselves about the impending disbanding of the Continental Army and the supposed promises made by the British that the Colonists would be granted all their grievances except for their independence, the general sat in his chair next to the fireplace and leaned his weary head against the high-back, closing his eyes he dozed momentarily.

Vision of the future?

A vision assaulted Washington?s senses as he sat. A wave of clairvoyance washed over his mind as General Washington?s eyes rolled in his head with the REM (rapid eye movement) experienced in the dream state, but now futuristic images were illuminating this leader of the ragged Continental Army. As the assembled staff of officers poured through the door of the command headquarters, General Washington stood firmly and confidently issuing orders that astonished his expectant young officers. The American General astonished his subordinates by ordering them to motivate the soldiers with projects to keep them busy and engaged while proclaiming that they would prevail over the British and victory would be theirs!

When a couple of the staff officers tried to inquire to what great event or development had the General derived so much inspiration from, Washington replied nothing had changed, but that they themselves would change the course of events with their own actions there and then, and he dismissed his men. French Commander Lafayette limped over to Washington crutches beneath his arms and excitedly asked the general what had happened to elicit such enthusiasm. George Washington confided in Lafayette of the incredible vision that he had experienced! The Frenchman had encouraged Washington all along not to surrender, not to capitulate to the British, now he could see that the General would indeed not cave in. The future was in the making!

Prediction from a dead man?

To make matters more eerie, when George Washington told Lafayette of the strange encounter he?d had with the Indian Chief who has opposed him at Monongahela, he suddenly remembered that he had been informed of the Native America?s death from illness some three years before! Once again, the mystical significance of Washington?s experience shined through. By sheer providence, Lafayette reasoned, the General was fulfilling his destiny. Fate had ordained it. The unknown had intervened once again in the course of human events, and this seemingly vague account of unusual origin is the prelude to something much greater.

That same fateful night that would change history forever, another supernatural miracle occurred. As Washington addressed some disgruntled soldiers who were ready to desert after they huddled around a fire in a barn and complained of the conditions they could no longer endure, they were confronted by the General. Rather than have them reprimanded or detained he let them go, but as Washington turned to leave the building, a soldier, delirious from a fever pointed at Washington from near point blank range and fired his pistol!

Another bullet fails to hit its mark

The soldiers there gasped in awe to see Washington untouched by the blast of the single shot dueling handgun as the afflicted man brushed past him still stammering in the depth of his delusion. This time General Washington stared back at his astonished men and then walked away unhurt heading for his quarters stunned by yet another inescapable coincidence. Another miracle of providence had taken place on that obscure yet significant night in the history of this nation. Had angels protected George Washington from harm? Had destiny assigned the great American General with a mission that would not be defeated, or was the Indian Chief right, that the ?Great Spirit? was watching over George Washington because fate would not be denied?

History is pock marked by the strange rumors and myths that revolve around the actions of great people who had an incredible influence in the outcome of the human affairs. It seems that some of these exaggerations reach legendary proportions while others turn out to be the undeniable facts that not only contradict our expectations of the norm, but confound us when such ethereal happenings are documented by witness testimony or corroborating evidence.

Some sobering facts

We know that George Washington fought in some 200 battles and was never wounded. We know that he was indeed a great leader and won against all odds against a superior British Army and Navy. We know that his coat had four bullet holes inside of it after the battle of Monongahela and his horse had been shot out from under him twice as French and American Indian rifleman fired away at him from short distances. A witness, who was captured after the battle, Mary Ingles, testified that two French fur trappers who took part in the battle she overheard saying that Washington has amazingly dodged so many bullets that terrible afternoon. Once again as we explore the eccentricities of history we are forced to accept the unknown influencing the outcome of historic human events.

The church of Elvis -- are you a believer?

Are you lonesome tonight? Is your spiritual life all shook up? When you talk with God, do your prayers come back marked return to sender? If so, it might be time to accept Elvis as your Lord and Savior.

Most religions today make me feel like Diogenes searching for sanity in a chaotic landscape strewn with the refuse of angry deities lashing out against sinners in the dark language of rapture. That's why I've decided to start a new religion based on a man born in Memphis who shook and shimmied his way to fame in mutton chop sideburns and a blue jumpsuit adorned with rhinestones.

The man's name was Elvis Presley. When people heard his music, it left them shaking like a leaf on a fuzzy tree. Some believe he's dead, but The King is still alive. He's just left the building.

Elvis is an icon, a genius, and a saint whose legacy includes a catalog of hits like ?Jailhouse Rock? and ?Hound Dog,? He introduced the world to rock 'n' roll and ministered to his fans like a living god. Since his return, Elvis has performed a number of miracles. For instance, a bright light forms around him whenever he performs onstage in old videos. And he's been seen everywhere! His likeness has appeared on Doritos chips and peanut butter and banana sandwiches. People see him on flying saucers which abduct them each week. Yes, Elvis lives. Except perhaps in Utah where he is still considered too sexual to be viewed below the waist.

As one digs deeper into Elvis lore, you begin to notice strange parallels and bizarre similarities between the King of Rock 'n' Roll and other religious leaders. For instance, Gautama Buddha died of food poisoning; America loved Elvis to death. Both Mohammed and Elvis were poor, uneducated kids who grew up to become famous. Horus, an Egyptian God, could walk on water; Elvis surfed in the movie ?Blue Hawaii.? Jesus said, "Love thy neighbor? and Elvis said, "Love me tender.?

Many have tried to impersonate Elvis since his death. Few have succeeded. That's because he was a hunk-a-hunk-a burning love. He had a charismatic personality and a generous soul. He touched millions of hearts and minds. He knew karate! The King was an encouragement to young people of his time, encouraging them to ?keep a moving, movin' on? and widened their horizons by insisting that they ?follow that dream.? Elvis was also very respectful of his mother when most teens were not.

Elvis was known to be very kind. He would give away cars to perfect strangers and was always gifting his friends. In Graceland, people still speak his name hushed tones. The King was arguably the greatest entertainer of all time, but his talent extended far beyond musical style and into the realm of ultra-human magnetism.

Of course, there were nonbelievers. Elvis was vilified by political leaders and Christians alike.

In 1956, the Reverend Carl Elgena told a Des Moines congregation that ?Elvis Presley was morally insane? and said that ?by his actions he's leading other young people to the same end.? Another Christian condemnation of Elvis took place in 1957 when Roman Catholic Bishop McVinney deplored ?youth's lionization of a pelvic contortionist,? and stated that Elvis' stage antics were ?intended to arouse the lower instincts.? A Philadelphia pastor, Reverend W. Carter Merbreier, noted that girls worshipped Elvis like a false god. The pastor attended a concert and likened the scene to ?Moses coming down from Sinai and finding the children of Israel in religious emotion before the Golden Calf.?

That didn't stop Elvis. He was cool, wonderfully gifted, and better known than Vanilla Coke. Like Jesus, he was simultaneously feminine and masculine, authentic and common, a meeting of black and white culture, and too human and generous to a fault. He had 12 Apostles: Tom (Jones), Paul (Anka), Chuck (Berry), Tina (Turner), Bo (Diddly), Neil (Sedaka), Little (Richard), Big (Bopper), Ritchie (Valens), Rick (Nelson), Chubby (Checker), and Engelbert (Humperdinck). Elvis was also plagued by Satan (Pat Boone).

Need more proof that Elvis is the risen God? Almost anything anyone says about him is true, yet almost everything you hear about him is flagrantly fictional.

What do you think, folks? Are you ready to shake, rattle, and roll to Humboldt County's Church of Elvis Presley? It's now or never. I hope to see you there. Thank you. Thank you very much.

Local golf notebook: Kozel gets second ace

By Tribune-Review

Published: Saturday, July 13, 2013, 5:33?p.m.
Updated 30 minutes ago

He made a hole-in-one while playing in the Constellation Senior Players Championship pro-am on June 26, and Rob Kozel couldn't have scripted it any better.

His son, Doran, was caddying for him that day at Fox Chapel Golf Club. Kenny Perry, who would go on to win the Champions Tour's major, was the pro in his group.

What Kozel couldn't have known after acing the sixth hole at Fox Chapel is that the feat would serve as a mere prelude to something about which most golfers can only dream.

Eight days after his first hole-in-one, Kozel made another ace ? and on a par-4 that played almost 350 yards.

This one came thousands of miles away on July 4, but it also happened in front of family. Kozel was playing with his father at Gozzmer Ranch Golf and Lake Club in Idaho where he belongs and owns a summer home.

Kozel, 50, is a good golfer who has a handicap of 6.6. But after playing the game for 25 years, the Fox Chapel resident had started to believe he would never achieve the golfing feat that requires a combination of skill and luck.

What are the odds that he would record two aces in eight days after going more than two decades without one?

?I'm living under a lucky star right now,? Kozel said with a laugh.

No one would have argued with Kozel, especially after his tee shot cut the corner on a 347-yard par-4 dogleg and found the bottom of the cup.

There is a water hazard less than 100 yards from the green on Gozzmer's sixth hole, and after he couldn't find his tee shot, Kozel took a drop and hit onto the green. What would have been a bogey five turned into a one on his scorecard after Kozel's girlfriend got to the green and announced, ?Hey, somebody left a ball in the hole.?

It was indeed that kind of golfing week for Kozel, who texted Fred Couples and Perry among others about his second ? and more improbable ? ace. Kozel is friends with Couples, and the latter stays with Kozel when he plays in the Senior Players Championship.

?The second (ace) was even more surprising,? Kozel said. ?I always thought it would just be nice to get (one) hole-in-one.?

Good track, better cause

The first Steel City Vets Classic still has room for teams, and the four-person scramble offers golfers a chance to help local veterans while playing one of the top public courses in Western Pennsylvania.

The outing will be held July 28 at Quicksilver Golf Club, a frequent host of U.S. Open qualifiers. The cost is $300 per team and $75 for individual golfers. That includes golf, prizes, a picnic-style lunch and an auction.

Proceeds from the event benefit Pittsburgh-area veterans, and event director Scott Reed is still soliciting teams/players, sponsors and prizes.

For more information, call 412-417-8779 or go to www.steelcityvets.com.

College golfer honored

Josh Stauffer became the first solo winner of the Frank Fuhrer III Award since 2009 last week.

The award is given by the Western Pennsylvania Golf Association to the area's outstanding collegiate golfer.

Stauffer shined as a freshman at St. Bonaventure. The Bradford resident notched three second-place finishes and won Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors three times.

Stauffer led the recent West Penn Amateur after two rounds before finishing fourth.

He is the first solo winner of the award since Mike Van Sickle, who has won the West Penn Open and Frank B. Fuhrer Invitational this summer. The award was shared by two players from 2010-2012.

Egypt's media embrace military after Morsi ouster

When autocrat Hosni Mubarak fell after popular protests in 2011, journalist Sabah Hamamou hoped for change at her newspaper, Al-Ahram, the state-owned media flagship with an editorial line firmly controlled by the regime.

Hamamou and some of her fellow journalists held demonstrations, issued petitions and pressed editors for the paper to break from state dictates and adopt independent, objective coverage.

Change never came. First, the military rulers who took over after Mubarak tightly controlled the paper. Once Mohammed Morsi became president, his Muslim Brotherhood stepped in and pushed coverage their direction.

"What happened was they just put in their people in Al-Ahram and other state institutions, and nobody tried to reform the institutions themselves," Hamamou said. "The saying goes if you are confused about who is ruling Egypt, just look at the headlines of Al-Ahram."

Now Hamamou is dismayed to see the paper and other state media unquestionably embracing the military after its coup that ousted Morsi on July 3, following protests by millions around the country demanding his removal.

It's not only state media. Independent TV stations and newspapers have also enthusiastically backed the military and its crackdown on the Brotherhood, which included shutting down four Islamist TV stations. Their full-throated support reflects how convinced they became over Morsi's year that the Brotherhood were fundamentally anti-democratic and intertwined with violent extremists.

Independent stations thrived after Mubarak's fall, usually touting their advocacy for democratic principles. Many, including several owned by wealthy opponents of the Islamists, were deeply critical of Morsi. They raised the alarm over signs of the Brotherhood monopolizing power, infringements of press freedoms and civil liberties, violent hate speech from his hard-line allies - and over the killing of protesters by police under his administration.

But in recent days, they have been uncritical of acts by the military.

After more than 50 pro-Morsi protesters were shot to death by security forces in clashes Monday, a star announcer on independent CBC TV, Lamis Hadidi - once a spokeswoman for Mubarak's 2005 re-election campaign - cautioned viewers not to think of the dead as "martyrs."

Instead, she blamed the Islamists for "a new Brotherhood massacre."

Egypt's media landscape has long been sharply partisan. The Brotherhood's TV station and others run by their ultraconservative Islamist allies - now off the air - were whole-heartedly in Morsi's camp. During the past weeks, the Brotherhood's party has posted pictures of children killed in Syria's civil war, presenting them as Egyptian Brotherhood dead.

Al-Jazeera TV, owned by Brotherhood ally Qatar, also was accused of strongly pro-Morsi coverage. Since protests against him began, the station has covered mass rallies in his support more extensively than those against him - the mirror image of some anti-Morsi stations' coverage. Six staffers quit accusing it of bias.

"At the end of the day, as much as journalism is supposed to be about a lack of bias, the opinion journalism model has taken over the media," said Mahmoud Salem, an Egyptian writer and political analyst - and sharp critic of the Brotherhood.

"Everyone wants to be a cheerleader for his or her team."

Now that has turned into lashing out at the other team as well.

Report: PSU to put 'potential proposal' to NCAA

By Jerry Hinnen | College Football Writer

Bill O'Brien met with Penn State trustees Friday. (USATSI)
Bill O'Brien met with Penn State trustees Friday. (USATSI)
It's hardly a secret that very, very few people in and around Penn State are happy with the NCAA's unprecedented sanctions against the Nittany Lions in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky abuse scandal. But officially, the school has -- to-date -- accepted the NCAA's decision and made no effort to reduce the sanctions.

Could that stance be changing? The Centre Daily Times reported that coach Bill O'Brien met with Penn State trustees for a private presentation Friday, one that included computer slides visible to the Daily Times reporter through "several full-length, glass-paned doors into the room where the session was held."

One of the slides bore the heading "potential proposal to modify sanctions."

Another detailed the impact of the NCAA's scholarship reductions. Another, per the Daily Times, emphasized that "Individual lawsuits do not help us!" with the words 'do not' underlined and in capital letters."

The family of the late Joe Paterno has sued the NCAA and president Mark Emmert in an effort to overturn the sanctions, which include the vacation of 111 of Paterno's wins at Penn State. Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett's similar suit was dismissed by a judge in June.

Neither O'Brien nor any of the trustees commented on the presentation after the meeting adjourned.

The NCAA said last August that the penalties were not subject to appeal, though that did not stop trustee Ryan McCombie, present at Friday's meeting, from sending a letter to the NCAA stating his intent to file an appeal all the same. Trustee Alvin Clemens said in February that the university's governing board would need to review the findings of its commissioned Freeh Report, which was used as the basis for the NCAA's sanctions.

Another trustee, Paul Silvis, told the Daily Times in March that he hoped the NCAA would roll back some of the sanctions after seeing the progress made by the school in the wake of the scandal. The NCAA handed Penn State a four-year bowl ban, stripped it of 40 scholarships and fined the school $60 million.

O'Brien was asked in May if he thought the sanctions would be reduced.

"I believe that's a question for somebody other than me," the coach told reporters at a Penn State caravan stop in New York. "I'm playing under these rules. I think that's a question for our administration or NCAA itself. My answer would be no, but that question would be for somebody else."

CBSSports.com writer Dennis Dodd contributed to this report.

It's about time: Disrupted internal clocks play role in disease

July 1, 2013 ? Thirty percent of severe alcoholics develop liver disease, but scientists have not been able to explain why only a subset is at risk. A research team from Northwestern University and Rush University Medical Center now has a possible explanation: disrupted sleep and circadian rhythms can push those vulnerable over the edge to disease.

The team studied mice that essentially were experiencing what shift workers or people with jet lag suffer: their internal clocks were out of sync with the natural light-dark cycle. Another group of mice had circadian disruption due to a faulty gene. Both groups were fed a diet without alcohol and next with alcohol, and the team then examined the physiological effects.

The researchers found the combination of circadian rhythm disruption and alcohol is a destructive double hit that can lead to alcoholic liver disease.

The study was published last month by the journal PLOS ONE.

"Circadian disruption appears to be a previously unrecognized risk factor underlying the susceptibility to or development of alcoholic liver disease," said Fred W. Turek, the Charles E. and Emma H. Morrison Professor of Biology at Northwestern's Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences and one of the senior authors of the paper.

"What we and many other investigators are doing is bringing time to medicine for the diagnosis and treatment of disease," Turek said. "We call it circadian medicine, and it will be transformative. Medicine will change a great deal, similar to the way physics changed when Einstein brought time to physics."

A number of years ago, Ali Keshavarzian, M.D., a gastroenterologist at Rush University Medical Center who has worked with and studied patients with gastrointestinal and liver diseases, had a hunch disrupted circadian rhythms could be a contributing factor to the disease.

Keshavarzian had noticed that some patients with inflammatory bowel disease (inflammation in the intestine and/or colon) had flare-ups of symptoms when working nights, but they could control the disease when working the day shift. He sought out Turek, director of Northwestern's Center for Sleep and Circadian Biology, to help investigate the relationship between circadian rhythms and the disease.

The two investigators and their groups first studied the effect of circadian rhythm disruption in an animal model of colitis and noted that disruption of sleep and circadian rhythms (caused by modeling shift work and chronic jet lag in the animals) caused more severe colitis in mice.

Keshavarzian has been studying the effect of "gut leakiness" (the intestinal lining becomes weak and causes dangerous endotoxins to get into the blood stream) to bacterial products in gastrointestinal diseases for two decades. Because the mouse model of colitis is associated with leaky gut, he proposed that disruption of circadian rhythms from shift work could make the intestine more susceptible to leakiness. He wanted to test its effect in an animal model of alcoholic liver disease -- where a subset of alcoholics develop gut leakiness and liver disease -- in order to find out whether shift work is the susceptibility factor that promotes liver injury.

"Non-pathogen-mediated chronic inflammation is a major cause of many chronic diseases common in Western societies and developing countries that have adopted a Western lifestyle," said Keshavarzian, one of the senior authors of the paper. He is director of the Division of Digestive Diseases and the Josephine M. Dyrenforth Chair of Gastroenterology.

Crohn's and ulcerative colitis, Parkinson's disease, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, autoimmune disease and cardiovascular disease are examples of these diseases, to name just a few.

"Recent studies have shown that intestinal bacteria are the primary trigger for this inflammation, and gut leakiness is one of the major causes," Keshavarzian said. "The factor leading to gut leakiness is not known, however. Our study suggests that disruption of circadian rhythms and sleep, which is part of life in industrial societies, can promote it and explain the susceptibility."

In the study, the Northwestern and Rush researchers used two independent approaches, studying both genetic and environmental animal models. The circadian rhythms of one group of mice were disrupted genetically: Each animal had a mutant CLOCK gene, which regulates circadian rhythms. The second group's circadian rhythms were disrupted environmentally: The animals' light-dark cycle was changed periodically, leading to a state similar to chronic jet lag.

Mice in both groups, prior to ingesting alcohol, showed an increase in gut leakiness.

Next, both groups of mice were fed alcohol. After only one week, animals in both groups showed a significant additional increase in gut leakiness, compared to control mice on an alcohol-free diet. At the end of the three-month study, mice in both groups were in the early stages of alcoholic liver disease.

"We have clearly shown that circadian rhythm disruption can trigger gut leakiness, which drives the more severe pathology in the liver," said Keith Summa, a co-first author of the study and an M.D./Ph.D. candidate working in Turek's lab.

"For humans, circadian rhythm disruption typically is environmental, not genetic, so individuals have some control over the behaviors that cause trouble, be it a poor sleep schedule, shift work or exposure to light at night," he said.

Sleep and circadian rhythms are an integral part of biology and should be part of the discussion between medical doctors and their patients, the researchers believe.

"We want to personalize medicine from a time perspective," Turek said. "Our bodies are organized temporally on a 24-hour basis, and this needs to be brought into the equation for understanding health and disease."
