Powerball profits don't all go where you think they do

22 hrs.

Ed Rodriguez, the father of two school-aged kids in Otisville, N.Y., had high hopes of? winning the $580 million Powerball jackpot last night. Either way, he figured at least some of?the money went to a good cause.

"Some of it goes to education," he said after buying a ticket Wednesday at a Citgo station on the Garden State Parkway in New Jersey. With many school budgets in his area facing tight budgets, "it helps a lot."

He'd be disappointed on both counts. He didn't win the largest Powerball drawing in history, which went to ticket holders in Arizona and Missouri. And the money doesn't do as much good for education?as he thinks.

About 72 cents of every state lottery dollar goes somewhere else. About 60 cents goes to the winner. Some goes to run the lottery. A piece of it goes to a private, Italian-based conglomerate that operates lotteries and slot machines in 50 countries around the world.

Depending on what state you live in, that leaves as little as 11 cents left to pay for the government services these games were created to help.

Critics argue that, aside from being an inefficient way to raise money, paying for government services with lottery sales?also?shifts a larger portion of?the overall tax burden to those who can least afford it.

?It?s a very regressive tax," said Lucy Dadayan, a senior policy analyst at the Rockefeller Institute of Government. ?And any time a government relies on a regressive tax it's not the best policy option.?But it?s easier for state officials to promote gambling rather than to increase income taxes or sales taxes.?

State-run lotteries have been around since the U.S. was founded, but the modern era of government games dates to the 1960s. Since then, they?ve spread to 44 states, which took in nearly $69 billion in sales in the 2012 fiscal year.

After paying the winners and covering?operating expenses, the roughly $19 billion in remaining?proceeds went to fund a long list of state and local programs and services, from education to social services,?according to ?David Gale, ?Executive Director, North American Association of State and Provincial?Lotteries.

?If lotteries were not in existence those programs and services would be cut or they would have to be funded through another source,? he said.

The bulk of the money collected from tickets ? about 60 cents of every dollar on average - goes back to the winners, said Gale. After expenses ? everything from advertising, fees paid to vendors selling tickets and salaries for lottery commission staff - ?the amount left over varies widely from state to state.

In Rhode Island, just 11 cents in net profits was returned to the 2012 state budget to support a variety of programs, from education to social services. Oregon?s lottery, the most profitable in the country, generated 50 cents in profits for each?dollar of ticket sales last year to help pay for education, economic development and natural resource programs.

Profits can vary for a number of reasons, said Pierce. Some states use some of the revenues to pay for gambling addiction counseling programs. Some states have?laws governing how much money can be spent on advertising.

To try to boost the take, a handful of states are considering turning over their lottery operations to private companies, like GTECH, which already provides a variety of services ? from computer systems to retail terminals ? to about half the states. ?Illinois and Indiana have signed on and New Jersey officials are considering the move, according to Robert Vincent, a company spokesman

"They?re saying, 'We think we can make more money for good causes if we put this in the hands of a private manager,'" he said. ?We think we can drive more sales over the course of the contract.?

With revenues of more than $1 billion last year, GTECH is owned by Lottomatica Group, an Italian-based global gaming giant with 8,000 employees in more than 50 countries worldwide. Vincent said many state-run lotteries simply have don?t have the expertise to maximize their profits and boost tickets sales.

?You?re competing with Altoids,? he said. ?You?re on the counter of a convenience store and it's an impulse purchase whether you?re going to buy a lottery ticket or buy something else that?s there competing for your attention. That?s a very different environment than other government agencies that are there to protect, collect and manage infrastructure.?

States' hard-pressed tight budgets can use all the tickets sales they can get, which has increased pressure on lottery commissions to raise more money.?

But critics of the reliance on lotteries to fund government argue that it shifts the funding burden unfairly onto the poor and working class.

The link between lottery sales and low-income purchasers has been fairly well established. In 2004, three Cornell economists reviewed 10 years of data from 39 states and found a strong correlation between lottery sales and poverty rates.

?State o?cials laud the bene?ts of lottery proceeds and promote the fun and excitement of participation,? the researchers wrote. ?This entertainment value is one explanation for lottery demand by the poor: individuals with lower incomes substitute lottery play for other entertainment.?

By contrast, the researchers found little correlation between poverty rates and sales of movie tickets.

In some cases, lottery revenues have been used to cut income and sales taxes, further shifiting the burden of paying for state services to the poor, according to Patrick?Pierce, a political scientist and author of "Gambling Politics: State Government and the Business of Betting."

Pierce found that in the early stages of initiating a lottery, spending on services like education went up for a few years, but then began to level off as the new lottery winnings eventually replaced taxes collected as general revenue.

?Governors could then take the political credit for no tax increases or tax cuts while they were governors,? he said. ?The only reason they were able to do it was because of the lottery. They didn?t make state government more efficient. They didn?t do anything other than benefit from this voluntary tax that state residents were paying.?

State officials have found another reason to rely more heavily on lottery revenues. While revenues from sales and income are slowly recovering from the 2007 recession and weak recovery, profits from state lotteries have bounced back sharply ? up 37 percent in the past two years.

Despite high unemployment and little or no wage growth, lottery ticket buyers are durable customers.

?When their situation becomes more desperate because of the economy, you get some folks playing the lottery precisely because their situation is more desperate,? said Pierce. ?And this is the only route they see to escaping the situation that they?re in.?

Five great games like World of Warcraft ? Video Games Reviews ...

    games like WoW

The term ?WoW clone? gets thrown around a lot when it comes to MMO games. Much in the way that every game with a first person view of a huge gun is not a Doom clone, there are plenty of MMORPGs that deliver a great gaming experience without being a copy of the Blizzard behemoth.

Even so, there is no denying that the most popular MMORPG for the last few years has been World of Warcraft, so it makes sense that we?d see a few concepts shared between different titles. Since there?s more than one place that sells hamburgers, it only makes sense that there?s more than one place that offers the WoW-like experience.

    Games like WoW

    Talisman Online

Video games feel like one of the only things for which saying ?if it?s free you can?t complain? doesn?t seem to apply. This counts double in the world of online gaming, where free-to-play games rise and fall on how happy they keep their communities. Talisman Online has a small but highly active community, and for the most part that group is pretty satisfied.

Account creation for Talisman is a little frustrating, mostly because they break a few basic internet rules, like emailing you your password in plain text. Once, I got over that and created myself a character, Talisman does a pretty good job of making sure you have a lot of unique content to start off with. The game places you in the ?Ancient Orient? against a dark evil that you must vanquish. Instead of allowing to choose one faction or another to play for, you?re stuck being the good guys.

A good part of the game feels like it could be played solo, but once you leave the starting area for your character you can team up with whoever is willing. The battle system feels almost identical to World of Warcraft, right down to the starting placement of attacks and the hovering icons for NPC?s that have things for you to do. The soundtrack that accompanies this game feels like it is straight out of Final Fantasy, including the more aggressive but still 16-bit battle music.

If you?ve got some time to kill and want to jump into something a little different, Talisman Online is free to play and requires very little in terms of hardware.

    Games like WoW

    Allods Online

Given the highly social nature of MMORPGs, most of these games do very little to integrate with your existing social networks. It?s not hard to see why ? maintaining an online community yourself gives you the ability to control what is being said (this is good for keeping conduct above board) and see everything as it happens. Allods Online surprised me out of the box by offering my account creation to just come from Facebook, as though I were playing a smaller, web-based game.

The basic concepts behind Allods are all very familiar. You?ve got two battling factions to choose from, and neither of the races on either side offer any appreciable benefit during gameplay. Allods has a ton of class types, and limits certain races to certain classes initially. Once you are in the game, you go through a tutorial style first mission that gradually acclimates you to the rules of the game and the placement of the keys for everything. By the time you have joined the rest of the world you find yourself with a few levels worth of experience and the required skills to play the game.

Allods introduced some interesting concepts that aren?t found in a lot of other MMO?s. The spellcaster classes, for example, have access to spells early on that can be stored for combat later. Since one of the key PVP advantages to playing against casters is the ability to get up close and personal before they can charge up most of their powerful spells, this concept introduces a great dynamic that helps shake up the stereotypes found in a lot of MMO?s today. Since it is free to play and requires very little of your system, Allods Online is a great game for any fan of WoW style gameplay to check out.

    Games like WoW

    Star Wars: The Old Republic

There?s nothing wrong with Azeroth or anything, but sometimes you just need a few lightsabers in your life. Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR) takes your character throughout what fans of the Star Wars franchise affectionately refer to as a stroll down memory lane. A game like this makes perfect sense, especially since Star Wars already has all of the hard parts laid out for you. There?s a vast yet extremely detailed universe, more races than you can count, and a clear cut line in the sand between one faction and another. It?s as if George Lucas planned the whole thing! All you need to make it work is a game publisher clever enough to shape the game around concepts that MMO gamers were already familiar with and you?d have a hit, right?

While it is pretty clear that elements of the character creation, battle system, and even the grind-style missions aren?t exactly original thoughts, there?s plenty of original content in SWTOR. The game features a completely unique set of plot points for each class type, though by staggering them through the same basic areas there?s still plenty of interaction between the classes throughout the game.

Recent updates like the Legacy system allow users to create entire families with stories that link into one another, allowing for the idea of a personal back story to flourish. The game itself has seen a number of attempts to keep users playing the game, including the move to Free to Play (with some restrictions).

Britain favours credentials over countrymen for BoE's top job

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Britain's choice of a Canadian to run the Bank of England could usher central bankers into the realm of globe-trotting elites that dominate the top jobs in business and sports.

When Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney takes over the Bank's next summer, as announced Monday, it will be the first time a foreigner has held the top position at a major national central bank.

Britons are used to not worrying about nationality and embracing professional credentials instead, allowing foreigners to run their national football teams as well as top companies.

The British central bank was already trend-setter in welcoming outsiders in its ranks. Americans DeAnne Julius and, until this year, Adam Posen, served as members of the Bank of England's decision-making Monetary Policy Committee.

By contrast, few Americans could imagine the U.S. president nominating a Briton to even sit on the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve, much less run it.

But as the world of finance becomes increasingly globalized, appointments like Carney's could become less unusual, some say.

"We don't think twice about having the best surgeon or the best engineer or the best mathematician. Having the best central banker is not a bad idea," said Kim Schoenholtz, director of the Center for Global Economy and Business at New York University, and a former chief economist at Citigroup.

"This is a professionalization of the craft of central banking."

In explaining the surprising decision, Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne stressed Carney's "fresh perspective" and called him "the very best" choice for the job, before nodding to potential concerns about loyalty.

"As a Canadian Citizen, is subject to Her Majesty the Queen," Osborne said, adding that, though it is not required, he will apply for British citizenship.

Even so, Carney may feel out of place in the Bank of England's grandiose "parlours," or being accompanied through its marble halls by "pinks" - the bank's iconic doormen who still wear top hats and pink tailcoats.

    A ?MIRROR OF MULTINATIONALS'

It is not uncommon for governments to trust non-citizens in matters of national importance.

The Papal Swiss Guards, once leased out by their government as mercenaries, still protect the Vatican, and the French Foreign Legion is composed mostly of non-French volunteers who fight for a country that is not their own.

Countries welcome promising Olympic athletes from abroad to compete on their behalf, and businesses with strong ties to their homeland look for leaders beyond their borders.

In one of countless examples of the private sector importing top executives, Anshu Jain, a British citizen of Indian descent, recently became the head of Deutsche Bank. At the time, Jain did not speak German.

But the protection of the money in people's pockets has been considered, at least until now, largely a national affair.

Carney runs the risk of attracting jingoistic criticism if the struggling British economy fails to gain momentum in the years to come.

"In that sense, he will be restricted," said Edwin Truman, senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, and a former director of the Federal Reserve Board's international finance division.

"Will he be more or less inclined to clash with the Parliament and government on fiscal policy?" Truman said. "I would think he would do less of that."

Peter Spiro, a citizenship law expert and professor at Temple University, said the traditional sense of national loyalty was being tested as business and finance goes global, and so does the expertise required to regulate it.

Wii Virtual Console: A look back at the service that looks back | Joystiq

Welcome to Living in the Past, a weekly column about what's new in old games. Now get off our lawn.

The Wii Virtual Console report card
There will surely be a slow trickle of Neo Geo games and the occasional Capcom release, but with the release of the Wii U, and the announcement of a Wii that drops literally all backward compatibility including the Virtual Console, I think we can safely assume the Wii Virtual Console is essentially dead. And having just now established its death, it seems like an appropriate, if artificial, opportunity to look back, to determine how successful an experiment Nintendo's old games marketplace was.

While there is plenty to lament about how the service turned out, it's easy to overlook just how unprecedentedly fantastic it is, even in its current state.

The first Virtual Console games hit the Wii Shop Channel in North America on November 19, 2006 ? the console's release date. It was likely a desperate move on Nintendo's part, an overture to the "core" audience following Nintendo in the past, when everything else about the Wii was a risky attempt to engage people who didn't care about video games, an attempt Nintendo did not yet know would succeed.

Twelve games were available that first day, including Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario 64, and Sonic the Hedgehog, representing the NES, SNES, Genesis, and Nintendo 64 systems. Two days later, Turbografx-16 games Bomberman '93 and Bonk's Adventure joined the lineup. Eventually, the list of supported systems would grow to include Turbografx-16 CD-ROM, Sega Master System, Commodore 64, Neo Geo, and arcade, though none of these platforms (with the exception of the Neo Geo) had anywhere near comprehensive Virtual Console catalogs.

In June 2007, Nintendo celebrated the arrival of the 100th game on the Wii Virtual Console, less than seven months after the launch of the classic game download service. The game chosen for this milestone was Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link. The 200th game came out after another seven months (it was either Harvest Moon or Lords of Thunder, which were released simultaneously). It took all the way to May 2009 for the 300th game to arrive. Nintendo, noticing the milestone after seemingly whiffing with number 200, released The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask to mark the occasion.

Now, at the end of 2012, the Virtual Console stands at 402 games, meaning it took over three years to add the last 100, versus the seven months it took in the early days. In fact, only 22 games have been added to the lineup in the whole of 2012, including just one NES game (Double Dragon II). Twelve games by Data East and Irem were actually removed from the Virtual Console this year.

The Wii Virtual Console report card
The gradual slowdown of releases over the last three years made it depressingly clear that the Virtual Console would never become the one-stop retro gaming omnibus it could have been ? the iTunes of games. The 92 NES games on the service (in North America) represent many of the highlights of the system, and a few rare imports, but the selection is far from the 677 officially licensed games identified on this Nintendo Age list. Just 21 games represent the Nintendo 64's lifespan.

Other stumbles include the lack of portability. It's a bit crushing to have to buy NES games again on 3DS as they become available; and while you can play Wii VC games on Wii U (through a separate Wii Menu), Nintendo has only referred to a separate "Wii U Virtual Console" going forward, which is very likely going to be a different service with a different selection. Worse still, Wii Virtual Console games, like all Nintendo downloads, are tied to a console rather than to an account, and require the intercession of Nintendo customer service should your console die.

And it's not a Virtual Console retrospective without the obligatory "Earthbound isn't available" complaint.

But too much time has been spent dwelling over the incomplete collection, slow releases, and precarious ownership scheme. The Virtual Console changed the world of video games, at least a little. Since the beginning of the service, downloadable retro games have been made available on PSN, Xbox 360, PC, Mac, and even mobile platforms, and I have no doubt we would see many fewer retro re-releases without the Virtual Console. The service taught publishers that there is a market for emulated games, that it's potentially worth the hassle of obtaining the rights and re-certifying their back catalogues with ratings boards.

The change wasn't as dramatic as it could have been. Even post-Virtual Console, nobody else is going for as comprehensive an approach, opting instead for curated collections of bona fide classics. The closest exception is Sony's PSOne Classics, with its hearteningly random assortment of licensed Disney games and fishing sims, but even that covers just one console's output. There's really nothing like the Virtual Console in terms of breadth, no other place to discover retro games you might not even have heard about.

I don't know what the Wii U Virtual Console will be like, but I hope for a worthy successor, however futile that hope may be.

Ten Tips for Winterizing Your Pets - Dog Health & Nutrition - Dog ...

Ten Tips for Winterizing Your Pets by Nancy Kay, DVM ?
    http://www.speakingforspot.com/Images/winterblog.jpg

Oh, the weather outside is frightful! Winter weather is rapidly approaching and you?ve likely begun layering your clothing and weatherproofing your car. When organizing for winter, don?t forget to think about your pets. They too are deserving of special treatment this time of year. Here are ten tips for keeping your pets cozy, comfortable, and healthy this winter:

    1. Just as arthritis can be more problematic for us when the temperature drops, so too does this apply to our animals. If your best buddy appears stiff first thing in the morning or is more tentative when navigating stairs or jumping up and down off the furniture, I encourage you to contact your veterinarian. These days, there are so many beneficial treatment options for soothing arthritis discomfort. For your pet?s sake, make the effort to learn more about them.

    2. When the temperature drops, outdoor kitties like to snuggle up against car engines for extra warmth. Be sure to provide plenty of notice before you start up your engine lest a ?kitty squatter? sustain serious injury as a result of moving auto parts. Vocalize and tap the hood a few times. Better yet, lift the hood to alert any slumbering guests of your intentions.

    3. Antifreeze is terribly toxic for dogs and cats. Even a few licks of the stuff can cause kidney failure and severe neurological symptoms, usually resulting in death. Unfortunately, most antifreeze products have a sweet flavor making them appealing to dogs. Cats are too discriminating to voluntarily taste the stuff, but should they step in antifreeze, they will ingest enough to be toxic during their grooming process. Please prevent your pets from having any access to antifreeze by checking under your vehicles for leaks and storing antifreeze containers in a safe place.

    4. Wintertime is definitely dress-up time for dogs, when the clothing is functional rather than just adorable. Just like us, many dogs are more comfortable outside when wearing an extra layer. Smaller dogs in particular have difficulty maintaining a normal body temperature when exposed to freezing conditions. If the love of your canine life happens to be an arctic breed (Malamute, Husky, Samoyed), no need for canine clothing!

    5. Regardless of season, all animals need access to water round-the-clock. If your pet is reliant on an outdoor water bowl, strategize a way to prevent the water from freezing. Water bowl heaters work well. Additionally moving water is more resistant to freezing- consider creating a little ?drinking fountain? for your pets.

    6. Sure the weather is cold, but your dogs still need plenty of exercise for their physical as well as their psychological well being. Besides, there?s nothing quite like the feeling of relaxing by the fire with a content and tired dog at your side! If the weather is truly too inclement for both of you to be outdoors, look for an indoor dog park or consider doggie day care, assuming your dog enjoys such venues.

    7. I?m all for hiking with dogs off leash, but in winter, be extra cautious around ponds and lakes for fear of thin ice. Not only is falling through the ice life threatening for dogs, it creates a situation that often becomes life threatening for the humans involved in the rescue operation.

    8. Salt on sidewalks and roads and even ice that adheres to all of that fuzzy hair between your dogs toes can create irritation and sores. Inspect and rinse your dog?s tootsies as needed.

    9. I strongly encourage having dogs and cats live indoors. If your living situation absolutely prevents this, and there are no other viable alternatives, please provide your pet with an enclosed shelter that is warmed by a heating device and contains plenty of clean, dry bedding. Also, remember that your pet needs just as much attention from you in frigid temperatures as during the warmer seasons.

    10. ?Tis the time of year when we humans tend to overindulge, eating all kinds of things we shouldn?t. Don?t allow your pets to become a victim of this holiday spirit. In addition to adding unwanted and unhealthy pounds, eating rich and fatty foods predisposes them to gastrointestinal upset and pancreatitis either of which could land your four-legged family member in the hospital for several days (not to mention create some significant rug-cleaning expenses for you).

What steps do you take to ensure your pets will be happy and healthy during the winter?

If you would like to respond publicly, please visit Ten Tips for Winterizing Your Pets speakingforspot.com.
Wishing you and your four-legged family members a joyful and healthy holiday season,

Improving Canberra's woeful workplace safety record | The RiotACT

    simon corbell

Simon Corbell has announced the release of the Briggs report into workplace safety in the ACT construction industry.

?The Government commits to providing a detailed response to each recommendation of the inquiry by the end of February 2013. In the interim, I can announce today that the Government will immediately take action on the report?s findings and recommendations as follows.

?First and foremost the Government agrees to increasing the number of inspectors in the Worksafe ACT Inspectorate ( recommendations 20 and 21) to enforce work health and safety laws on worksites as part of the development of the 2013-14 ACT Budget.?

The Government has also decided to adopt the following recommendations:

    ? Recommendation 4 ? to establish a target of a 35% improvement in the serious injury claim rate;

    ? Recommendation 20 ? to increase the number of work health and safety matters for which infringement notices (on the spot fines) can be issued to both employees and employers, including sub-contractors;

    ? Recommendation 22 ? to appoint an Industrial Magistrates Court;

    ? Recommendation 23 ? to implement better coordination of ACT Planning and Land Authority building inspectors and WorkSafe inspectors in the field to target specific concerns on worksites and to link their enforcement and demerit point systems;

? Recommendation 25 and 26 ? to implement, by June 2013, the ?active certification? approach into government procurement and establish comparative assessment of contractor?s safety records when competing for government projects; and,

? Recommendation 12 ? To work with other jurisdictions to establish a national registration scheme for engineers as soon as practicable, and to require engineers engaged on ACT Government projects to demonstrate their current registration on the Professional Engineers Register wherever applicable.

Mr Corbell said he would also convene a meeting of the ACT Work Safety Council to discuss the
findings of the report and agree on steps for implementation.

[Photo courtesy Simon Corbell's office: Lynelle Briggs, Simon Corbell and Mark McCabe]

UPDATE 26/11/12 13:48: Mayor Shane is claiming the report vindicates Green policies:

?This is a critical report for a jurisdiction with an unacceptable rate of injuries and deaths on worksites. This report should mark a turning point in the ACT?s attitude and efforts on worksite safety.

?The Report reflects many of the key issues the Greens campaigned for in the last Assembly, and before the last election, as part of a pledge to make Canberra into Australia?s ?work safety capital?.

?The Report backs up the Greens? campaign for a new approach to Government tendering. It recommends that the Government ?uses its purchasing power to ensure through its tendering process that only contractors with good health and safety records are allocated government work.?

?The Report makes important recommendations for reform of construction industry training- an issue the Greens took to the election, and which we reflected in our Parliamentary Agreement with the Labor Party.

?It is important that the Government implements the Report?s recommendations with priority. I want to see the ACT begin a new era of worksite safety, and this is the concern of the Government, the industry, and the ACT community,? Mr Rattenbury said.

How to Get Your Business on Apple's Passbook

The long-term?overall impact of Apple?s Passbook has been a hot topic over the last two months since it was launched with iOS 6 on the iPhone and iPod Touch.

But one thing is for sure: if you?ve got a business ? small, medium or large ? where getting people in the door is important, and are looking to follow in the footsteps of the likes of?McDonalds,?United Airlines,?Eventbrite,?MLB,?Starbucks,?American Express?and others, you should at least be looking into Passbook.

We wanted to go over the basics of what constitutes a Passbook ?Pass?, and give you some insight into how to go about building your own Passes from scratch, because, unlike building a full-fledged iOS app (or even a mobile friendly version of your website), Passbook in most cases should require less development time to get your brand onto someone?s iPhone (although like anything, the more complicated the Pass the more work will be required).

Also, for businesses that don?t want to bother with development at all, even though Passbook functionality has just recently been introduced, there is already a healthy number of still-kinda-in-beta third-party services that promise to take most if not all of the technical aspects out of creating Passes, and we take a quick look at those as well.

    DIY Passes

passbook overview Dont Pass this up: Getting your business on Apples Passbook, DIY style

First of all, it?s important to understand that Passes are not apps?? Passbook is an app (that is installed by default on iPhones with iOS 6 nd can?t be removed), but the actual Passes (coupons, whatever) are just a file type that only works on iOS 6 (iPhone, iPod Touch ? not iPad right now) and in?OS X 10.8.2.

When a user clicks on a Pass file (for example: example.pkpass) on any of those devices it will add it to Passbook, and, if the user has iCloud set up, it?will sync the Pass across all of the user?s devices. So a Pass can be completely independent of an iOS app ? or, if you do have or are planning to build an iOS app, Passbook can be integrated into your app as well.

There are currently five Pass types; Boarding Pass, Coupon, Event Ticket, Store Card, or ?Generic? (yes, that can cover a lot of things) and each of them has their own look and feel, although in all cases, the look is generally a solid color background with as little text as possible and a 2D barcode that can be read by laser and optical scanners. Apple ? a bit smugly ? suggests that you could use the camera of an iPhone/iPad as your in store scanner.

Unless you run an airline, train or bus company, we?re guessing the use of the Boarding Pass, um, Pass, isn?t on your radar.?The other four, however, are all Passes that many businesses that rely on getting people to walk in the door can use. For example, a fitness club could use the Coupon Pass to get new members, who then could get a Store Card they could use daily as a membership card, and if the club held a special event, the Event Ticket Pass could even be used as well (although most likely you?d just use the Store Card for entry, but we?re being hypothetical here).

For each of these Passes, you can also set date/time and location alerts that push to a user?s home/lock screen at the appropriate place and time. Beyond the simplified, digital wallet interface of the Passbook app, and of course the tremendous number of iPhones in use, these place/time push notifications should be very attractive to many businesses.

Even better, like the rest of a Pass, businesses have the ability to push changes to the Pass to alter these parameters (so if your event gets delayed, all you have to do is push out the time change and the Pass will show a notification at the new time).

passbook timelocation Dont Pass this up: Getting your business on Apples Passbook, DIY style

Passes are two-sided ? the front is your coupon/ticket/membership card/etc., and the back has your contact information, the option to delete the Pass from Passbook, and a link that opens up your iOS app if you a) have one, and b) the user has installed the app. While it?s obviously a bit obscured on the back of the card, if you do have an app and the user hasn?t downloaded it yet, this is a nice little bonus channel for app installs, although it will probably be a small one.

The .pkpass file is a compressed (zipped) file that contains the images, text, and server files that constitute the Pass. The server commands that you?ll need to code to run a basic Pass aren?t very complicated ? but of course, if you are building a very dynamic Pass that heavily integrates into your back-end systems, it will most likely get much more complicated. The good news is that Apple has some very clear documentation on developing for Passbook, and simple, non-dynamic passes are pretty straightforward.

The compressed Pass file must be signed using an Apple developer key, and this is an important point: according to Apple?s rules, all Passes must be signed by a unique developers key that is owned by the business that this producing the Pass. Apple says that if you use a ?contractor? they should be using your development key that is associated with your brand/identity/business etc. If you already have an iOS app, you should be able to associate that with your Passes using this signed key as well.

How this rule meshes with the third-party apps we?ll cover below seems to be a grey area at the moment ? if there are any lawyers reading this, we?d certainly be interested to hear your take. However, if you share your own key (yes, you?ll need to cough up the $99 a year Apple development fee) with a freelance developer, you?re certainly in the clear with Apple.

Once you have a Pass ready, getting the word out about the Pass is simple enough, especially after Apple recently introduced the ?Add to Passbook? button, which gives visitors to your website, or readers of your email newsletter, a?recognizable?(at least eventually) reminder to add a Pass. Passes can also be shared or installed by a link without the badge (as with the ?Add to Passbook? badge, the user just clicks on the link and the device automatically?recognizes and adds the Pass to the user?s Passbook) as well.

So, if you have access to a development team and a designer, in our estimation you shouldn?t be afraid of building your own Passes ? especially if you don?t plan to make them to dynamic (for instance, changing remaining balances on the card in near real-time would be trickier), they shouldn?t take take too much development effort to complete.

Another bonus is that if you are planning multiple Passes of the same type (for instance, a weekly Coupon) most likely after you built it once, updating for new Passes shouldn?t take much effort. At the very least, if you have a development team and/or work with an outside developer already and are interested in Passbook, have them take a look at Apple?s documentation to see what kind of investment it will take to get going.

However, if you don?t have access to development resources (or just want a solution that takes the tech out of it), as we said, a number of services have already popped up that offer Pass creation and management.

    Pass creation services

Since the launch of iOS 6 in September, there has been a wave of services/startups that are focusing on tools for marketers to build, share and track Passes.

As Passbook becomes used more widely, marketers and business owners ? many of whom have no development resources or experience ? will want an easy to use but powerful service to build, distribute and track the success of Passes. A very similar ecosystem was created for Facebook Pages as well as of course for mobile apps themselves, but all things being equal, Passes are much closer to the development commitment needed for Facebook Pages than they are to mobile apps, so it?s not surprising these services were able to get up and running so quickly.

In a not-t0-distant-future article we?ll do a full-review of all of these and other similar services (many of which seem to be, quite frankly, in, or still hardly out of, beta), but if you are interested to try them out now (some have a trial period) before our review, here are some that we?ve hit upon so far in no particular order:

If you know of any other services like these, please just let us know in the comments and we?ll take a look for our review.

So, if you?re a business that is thinking of getting going with Passbook, hopefully this article has taken a little bit of the fear out of the way, and you can start thinking about what you?d like to start offering users and whether to do the development on your own, find a developer to work with or give a third-party service a shot.

    Detecting Cancer...With a Cellphone?

Smartphone technology is often seen as much of nuisance as it is a convenience, but having that kind of communicative power at our fingertips has a surprising advantage; it?s serving as a bridge, bringing ?healthcare to third world countries that had previously been too remote and too costly to reach.

The Kilimanjaro Cervical Screening Project is spearheading one use of smartphone technology in a way that?s surprisingly simple, but could end up saving thousands of women's lives.

Armed with screening kits, treatment tools and cellphones, teams of non-physician medical workers will visit remote locations in rural Tanzania to screen women for cervical cancer. Instead of the swab method used in the typical Pap smear, workers will use their cellphones to photograph a patient?s cervix, text the image to a physician and then receive back a diagnosis and treatment recommendation.

But can it really be that simple? Dr. Karen Yeates?of Queen's University, who is the lead investigator of the project, told CNN, "That's the beauty of it -- for early grade cancers, those will be able to be treated right in the field, right in the rural area.?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), rates of cervical cancer in Africa are up to ten times those in developed countries, and among those diagnosed, about?50,000 women die from it annually.

Though cervical cancer has very low mortality rates in developed countries like the U.S., that's generally due to regular screenings which catch the disease in its earliest and most treatable incarnations.?However, in countries like Tanzania, women in remote villages obviously don't have access to those types of preventative measures. Subsequently, the WHO estimates that by the time most African women are diagnosed with the disease, they?ve already advanced into its latest fatal stages. But regular screenings could put a stop to that.?

In addition to addressing reproductive healthcare, cellphones are as of late becoming facilitators of cardiac care in developing countries as well. Earlier this year, high school student?Catherine Wong discovered how to turn her cellphone into a portable ECG machine, bringing heart monitoring capabilities to the most remote locations with results that could be beamed to doctors no matter how far away.

The Kilimanjaro Cervical Screening Project is gaining some notoriety because it's recently become one of the 68 finalists in Canada?s Grand Challenges, a fund awarded to medical innovators who?ve invented new systems or products to bring healthcare to the poorest parts of the world. As a finalist, the Kilimanjaro Project has been granted $100,000, allowing it to begin its initial trials.

So much of good healthcare rests on the early detection of illness and now that geography and cost aren't the impediments they once were, patients in developing countries have real opportunities to survive illnesses once believed to be fatal.?

Do you expect that "mobile healthcare" may eventually become the standard method of care in countries like the U.S. as well? Let us know what you think about it in the Comments.

Carissa Henry: Divorce: The Darkness Before The Dawn

Our relationship had become weathered and worn by time, until that last little bit of goodness between us had eroded away as though it were a natural part of life. So after much reflection and consideration, we decided to end our marriage.

Because we agreed to remain amicable and on good terms for our two children, I assumed that this divorce would be easier than the messy divorces we witnessed over the years. We vowed to work together to be good co-parents and still collaborate on all things involving the children -- just from two different households. We planned to set a new precedent for divorce and do it in a way that few have done it before, defying the odds and modeling a noteworthy example. Essentially, I thought I had it all figured out, and in the recesses of my mind, I had painted a landscape of ease and civility. I was going to master divorce in the same way I mastered college-level British Literature, with a zealous A+.

But I was not prepared for what happened in the months that followed. I had no idea how much it would hurt when the wave of sadness and reality finally came crashing down on me. Out of nowhere, I unexpectedly found myself lost, grief-stricken, and emotionally struggling to stay afloat. I thought I was mentally equipped and ready for this divorce, yet I was suddenly falling apart. There were a few things I wish I'd known about divorce before I faced it and a few things I've learned thus far:

There is no such thing as an easy divorce.

My father told me this, but I didn't really believe him at the time. No matter how well you get along with your ex, the ending of any relationship is painful and confusing, even more so if children are involved. If you share children with your ex, he or she will always be a part of your life -- like it or not. The fact that the dynamic of your relationship has changed is unsettling and strange, and remnants of regret still linger. Even when a divorce isn't volatile, it still hurts, but it's a quiet, deep ache. The days on which my children are away from me are the darkest, loneliest times in my life. The sound of their liveliness is replaced by silence and emptiness, and I'm not sure I'll ever grow accustomed to their momentary absences. Being cordial with an ex-spouse is beneficial for the well-being of children, but unfortunately, it doesn't make divorce a painless experience.

You don't just divorce your spouse; you also divorce your life.

I didn't realize how much of my identity was associated with being married, nor did I realize that I would suddenly feel like a stranger in my own life. Most of us are dedicated creatures of habit and the drastic change that divorce brings to our lives is shocking and disconcerting. Friendships change. Holidays change. Paperwork changes. Everything changes. Amidst my naivety, I was oblivious and unprepared for how different I would feel, how utterly uncomfortable in my own skin I would become. Order and routine were replaced by uncertainty and chaos, and I felt lost without the habits and rituals we had established as a family over the years.

    Self-doubt and self-blame are vicious.

Self-doubt and self-blame are like the plague, but instead of wreaking havoc on one's body, they infect one's soul. After the divorce, I had no idea how intensely my mind would scrutinize almost everything I've ever done or thought, every move I've ever made to get to this point in my life. My mind became a combat zone in which I fought brutal battles against myself, flashing back to happier times, and then forward to more difficult times when we were falling apart, wondering what I should have done differently. I blamed and doubted myself to such a degree that I quickly depleted what little self-love I had. I never imagined that I would need to arm myself against the critical, relentless voice that lived inside my head. I needed constant reminding that I was not solely responsible for this divorce and that my children deserved two happy parents, even if they were happy separately.

    The sadness will come.

No matter how tough and guarded you are, sadness and regret will eventually catch up with you. When you planned on spending the rest of your life with someone and had hopes, dreams, and a multitude of memories together -- and then it all ends -- it's sad. Even if the decision to divorce is the right one, there is still a huge sense of loss, and the most common reaction to loss is sadness. Some days, it can be overwhelming. I wish someone had told me, "Go ahead and give yourself permission to cry. Sadness is like a virus: it has to run its course and work its way out of your system."

It took me accidentally stumbling across an article outlining the stages of grief to realize that I had been experiencing them: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and then acceptance. It was like an epiphany for me, a powerful moment of enlightenment in which my feelings were suddenly validated and my emotions made sense. I didn't know beforehand that divorce would almost feel like a death in the family, nor was I aware of the emotional impact that even a civil divorce would have on me. People told me that it would be "hard", but no one informed me of the immense grief that would afflict my soul, grief that would unassumingly latch onto me in stages. I muddled through those stages for months until one day, I realized that I hurt less than the day before, and I slowly began to heal.

People leave marriages because they are ultimately unhappy or unfulfilled, so instead of continuing on a path of unhappiness, they choose to go in another direction. Even if divorce is the right choice and you embark upon it with a positive attitude, that doesn't necessarily mean that it will be easy and that you won't experience some degree of suffering. Those experiencing the aftermath of a divorce must realize that the road does get easier. The burden you carry does get lighter, or else it just becomes less difficult to bear because in time, you become stronger. In the midst of sorrow, you have to believe that brighter days are ahead, even though you can't envision them yet. Life will get better, but it's likely to get worse first. After all, some of the darkest hours of the night are right before the dawn.

UPDATE 3-Soccer-World Cup hosts Brazil fire national team coach

    * Menezes sacked as Brazil look for fresh start

    * New coach to be chosen in early January

    * Scolari, Ramalho and Braga among favourites (re-casts)

SAO PAULO, Nov 23 (Reuters) - Brazil fired Mano Menezes on Friday, little more than 18 months before the country hosts the 2014 World Cup and just as the coach seemed close to finding his ideal team after two years of experimenting.

The five-times world champions have won six of their last eight games, scoring 26 goals in the process, and the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) said the surprise decision had little to do with results.

"I don't think it was for negative results, if that was the case he could have been fired last year," national teams director Andres Sanchez told a news conference in Sao Paulo. "It was that the president (Jose Maria Marin) wants to change the way things are done."

Sanchez, who hired Menezes and is a close friend, himself disagreed with the decision.

"I don't think we should be changing tack at this time, but I was overruled," he said.

Menezes had been facing almost continual speculation about his future for the last year, but recent performances appeared to have lifted the pressure.

His last match was a friendly away to Argentina on Wednesday when they lost 2-1 in a match featuring only home-based players.

A new coach will be chosen in early January, Sanchez added, with Luiz Felipe Scolari, who led Brazil to their fifth world title in 2002, among the favourites to take over.

Menezes replaced Dunga shortly after Brazil's quarter-final exit at the 2010 World Cup and immediately began a complete overhaul of the team, which included moving them away from their physical and counter-attacking style.

In 40 games, Menezes's side won 27, lost seven and drew six, according to his official website (www.manomenezes.com.br).

Although some performances were unconvincing, Menezes's extensive experimenting appeared to be bearing fruit in the last few weeks, as they clocked up a 6-0 win over Iraq, a 4-0 demolition of in-form Japan and a 3-0 win over Sweden.

The pairing of Paulinho and Ramires in front of the defence has brought creativity to roles which were purely destructive under Dunga, while the attacking combination of Oscar, Neymar and Hulk is one of the best in the world.

With Thiago Silva in commanding form at the centre of defence and Kaka back to provide some experience, the team was starting to look more robust and dangerous.

Many felt that Menezes was in an impossible situation as many of the friendlies arranged by the CBF were against lightweight opponents such as South Africa, China, Gabon and Iraq, where his team had nothing to win.

But they fared badly against established sides, losing to Germany, Argentina and Mexico.

Brazil also performed poorly at last year's Copa America, losing on penalties to Paraguay in the quarter-finals, and in the Olympics, when his under-23 team were beaten by Mexico in the final in London.

Although he brought a quiet elegance to the team set up off the field, the former Corinthians boss was not universally popular and was even booed by his own fans in recent months.

When they struggled to a 1-0 win at home to South Africa in Sao Paulo in September, fans jeered Menezes and striker Neymar. Some of them celebrated Menezes's demise on Friday.

"This is a good day for Brazilians. Now we can win," said psychologist Sergio Gomes, giving a thumbs-up sign of approval at a bar in the capital Brasilia.

Former Brazil great Romario also lauded the decision, calling it "overdue" and "a historic day in which Brazil should be letting off fireworks and partying."

    INTENSE PRESSURE

Menezes made a brief statement on Twitter thanking the players and staff and wishing the squad the best of luck.

"I wish every success to the Brazilian national side in fulfilling the fans' dream of winning the World Cup for a sixth time in 2014," he said.

Among those mentioned to take over include Scolari, Tite, who took Corinthians to the Copa Libertadores title earlier this year, Muricy Ramalho, who turned down the job before Menezes and is now Santos coach and Abel Braga, who recently led Fluminense to the Brazilian championship title.

Although Sanchez said he was opposed to a foreign coach, some commentators have suggested that Brazil should attempt to hire former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola.

Whoever takes the helm in January will face intense pressure. One previous manager famously said Brazil is a country where every man, woman and child thinks they can do a better job coaching the national team than the coach.

The new coach's first game will come against England at Wembley on Feb. 6.

Four months later Brazil host the Confederations Cup, the team's only competitive matches before they open the World Cup in Sao Paulo on June 12, 2014. (Additional reporting by Tatiana Ramil, Pedro Fonseca, Anthony Boadle and Asher Levine; Editing by Greg Stutchbury)
