Coffman pulls away from rest of Colorado GOP on immigration

WASHINGTON ? Two of Colorado's most prominent Republicans pushed varying messages Tuesday on how to achieve comprehensive immigration reform to a House subcommittee ? a rift that exemplifies the uphill battle the issue has in getting accomplished before the end of the year.
Rep. Cory Gardner, a Republican from Yuma, said that while he believed so-called DREAMers ? young people brought to the United States as children by undocumented parents ? should be afforded a path to citizenship eventually, he didn't want to enact new legislation without proven border and interior security first.
"We have to focus on border security first and enforcement of the law and then we can move onto questions about citizenship," he said, a few minutes before testifying before a packed subcommittee hearing under the House Judiciary Committee. "There is no bill right now so let's start with the border and then go from there."
Rep. Mike Coffman, a Republican from Aurora, had a softer view Tuesday ? an opinion he acknowledges has evolved because his newly redrawn district is now 20 percent Latino.
Coffman said he believes comprehensive immigration reform ? increased border security and a provisional citizenship status for the millions of undocumented people living in the United States now ? needs to happen mostly simultaneously.
Then, when it has been proven the border is secure, a pathway to apply for legal citizenship should be opened for all undocumented people, he said.
As for the DREAMers, Coffman said he believed border security and the pathway to legal status should happen at the same time. In his formal statement to the subcommittee Tuesday, he promoted his own legislation that would allow DREAMers become citizens if they join the military.
Coffman's sentiment contradicts earlier statements he has made against the DREAM Act and a pathway to citizenship for undocumented adults. It also contradicts his vote last month to defund President Barack Obama's executive order allowing DREAMers to apply for temporary work permits.
"Every congressman and congresswoman always, I think, feels an attachment to their constituents and quite frankly my constituents have dramatically changed," he said, in an interview after the hearing. "In my prior district, the only immigration problems I dealt with were kids going overseas who needed a visa. ... It's very different now. I gotta tell you it really breaks my heart to sit down with some of these people and they tell me what their day-to-day lives are like. I admit I've been moved by some of those stories."
Coffman and Gardner's high-profile testimonies Tuesday come at a critical time for the U.S. House of Representatives as its leadership tries to parse diverging opinions within the chamber on how to tackle immigration reform.
The U.S. Senate last month passed a comprehensive package that calls for an overhaul of the nation's visa system, a pathway to citizenship for the majority of undocumented people living and working in the United States, and an expedited path for DREAMers to become legal residents.
"It's encouraging to see the House have this discussion," said Sen. Michael Bennet, a Democratic architect of the Senate's legislation. "It's time to pass an immigration bill for our economy and for our communities. The DREAM Act is an important element to fixing the system."
Though the Senate bill passed 68-32 with bipartisan support, the Republican-controlled House rejected the deal. Most GOP members ? including Gardner, Rep. Scott Tipton and Rep. Doug Lamborn ? say they prefer to focus on border security before having any conversations about a pathway to citizenship for people living in the United States illegally.
President Obama said in a series of interviews with Spanish language television stations last week ? including Telemundo Denver ? that he didn't believe in tackling immigration reform in a piecemeal fashion.
"The danger of doing it in pieces is that a lot of groups want different things. And you know, there's a tendency I think to put off the hard stuff until the end. And if you've eaten your dessert before you've eaten your meal, at least with my children, sometimes they don't end up eating their vegetables," the president said to a Denver reporter in a one-on-one interview. "So we ? we ? we need to, I think, do this as a complete package. You know ... we've been working on this for years now, everybody knows what the debates are. It's time for us to ? stop worrying about politics, and worry about doing the right thing for the country."
The White House and House Republicans are in agreement on one thing: No one believes immigration reform will be accomplished before the five-week August recess.

Sony Santa Monica answered a lot of important questions over the weekend, which started with Just Tank, Community Strategist, offering up a statement as to what happened with Dart possibly coming to PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale as DLC:

While we considered many characters during development and even created concept art for a number of characters and environments that were being explored during the game?s development phase, including Dart, we were not able to incorporate all of them into the final game. We will continue to be committed to supporting the PlayStation All-Stars online community through online match-making and will ensure server stability.

The Sony Santa Monica Twitter account also got in on the Dart action, saying, ?it was only ever a piece of concept art and never anything planned further after a short discovery.? They then followed this up by plainly stating on the topic of PlayStation All-Stars in general, ?we have no new content planned at this time.?
After someone replied to the Dart tweet with ?you let us down again the same way you [did] with Fat Princess and Starhawk by not supporting it,? SSM explained, ?we are maintaining servers for Starhawk and also just helped the largest clan.? Based on that comment, it doesn?t seem like Starhawk will join MAG, SOCOM 4, and SOCOM Confrontation?in the land of shut off servers this January.

MINNEAPOLIS FATAL SHOOTING
Man fatally shot in chest in Minneapolis
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? A 23-year-old man who was fatally shot in Minneapolis has been identified.
A release from the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's office says DeShaun Guilmant of St. Cloud was shot multiple times in the chest Friday night. He died on scene.
According to the Sunday news release, the Minneapolis police department is investigating the shooting as a homicide.
ST PAUL POLICE LAWSUITS
St. Paul pays $1M in 2012 for police lawsuits

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) ? The city of St. Paul paid about $1 million in total costs for lawsuits alleging police misconduct last year.
The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that's the largest amount in at least 17 years.
Of the eight lawsuits settled in 2012, half the incidents occurred during Chief Thomas Smith's tenure. The other half were during John Harrington's time as chief. His six-year term started in 2004.
City Attorney Sara Grewing says larger conclusions shouldn't be drawn from the recent cases because the decision to settle is based on what's in the best financial interest of the city.
President of the St. Paul NAACP, Jeff Martin, says an officer who costs the city and taxpayers this sort of money should be held to a higher standard.
STABBING DEATH-DULUTH
Minn. teen to be tried as adult in veteran's death

DULUTH, Minn. (AP) ? A Duluth teen charged with killing a United States Army veteran who suffered more than 50 wounds to his head, face, neck and back will be tried as an adult.
Enrique "Ricky" Robert Giner IV had been charged in a juvenile delinquency petition with second-degree murder in the March slaying of 27-year-old Bryan Alan Starnes in Duluth. He was 17 at the time. Giner turned 18 on July 7th.
The Duluth News Tribune reports a judge accepted Giner's waiver into adult court and ordered he be moved from Arrowhead Juvenile Center to the St. Louis County Jail. He will be charged with the same crime in an adult criminal complaint.
Starnes was an Army veteran who served a tour of duty in Afghanistan.

Trial to start for Minn. man in double homicide

LA CROSSE, Wis. (AP) ? The trial for a Minnesota man accused of killing a La Crosse photography store owner and his son last September is set to begin this week.
Prosecutors are expected to argue that outstanding debt from a prior felony case drove Jeffrey Lepsch, a hobby photographer, to rob May's Photo on September 15th and shoot 56-year-old Paul Petras and his 19-year-old son A.J.
The La Crosse Tribune reports jury selection is set for Tuesday and Lepsch's trial is expected to last nine days.
His three public defenders have not revealed the defense.
The 40-year-old from Dakota, Minnesota is charged in La Crosse County with two counts of first-degree intentional homicide, armed robbery with use of force and possession of a firearm.
Lepsch remains jailed on a $2 million cash bond.
FRAC SAND DEMAND
Demand for frac sand falls in Wis., Minn.

WINONA, Minn. (AP) ? Short-term demand for frac sand in western Wisconsin and eastern Minnesota has fallen because there's more sand available than the industry currently needs.
The Winona Daily News reports demand had exploded several years ago, spurring companies to open mines and processing facilities and ship across the country for fracking operations.
Paul van Eijl works on purchasing land for Superior Sand Systems in the region. He says until demand increases the company's new facility in Wabasha, permitted in December 2012, will likely remain idle.
The Freedonia Group, a market research organization, estimates that the annual demand for silica sand will increase by at least 4.8 percent every year at least until 2016.
Winona County planning and environmental services director Jason Gilman says he suspects the stabilization is only temporary.
MINNESOTA WATERFOWL
Minnesota breeding duck population rises
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) ? Despite a record late ice-out, spring waterfowl surveys show that Minnesota's breeding duck population has improved from last year.
The Department of Natural Resources estimates the state's breeding duck population at 683,000 compared with 469,000 last year. This year's estimate is 10 percent above the long-term average.
This year's Canada goose population is estimated at 250,000, considerably less than last year's 416,000. The DNR says cold temperatures and April snowfall combined with a late ice-out reduced nesting success. But DNR wildlife section chief Paul Telander says the goose population remains higher than managers want it to be.
So Minnesota will hold its first-ever August Canada goose season from August 10th through 25th in a special zone in west-central Minnesota.
The DNR will announce this fall's waterfowl hunting regulations later this summer.

David Cameron: Firms Like Google Need To Do More To Block 'Depraved and Disgusting' Search Terms

David Cameron said on the BBC?s Andrew Marr show that search engines such as Google need to do more to block results for ?depraved and disgusting? searches for child abuse.Cameron said: "I think it's wrong that they should get results and we need to have very, very strong conversations with those companies about saying 'No, you shouldn't provide results for some terms that are so depraved and disgusting'.
"I think there's going to be a big argument there, and if we don't get what we need we'll have to look at legislation."
The discussion today comes ahead of a speech the Prime Minister is expected to make tomorrow, which will put forward a plan by the government, including having a ?blacklist? of words provided to search engines by the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre.
Anyone searching for terms on this list will be made to view a webpage warning them of the consequences of their actions, which could include losing their job and access to their children, according to a snippet of the speech seen by the BBC.
Google says that when child abuse images are found, it acts to remove them.
