OLPC working on XO laptop telescope and microscope peripherals (hands-on)

OLPC working on XO laptop telescope and microscope peripherals handson

So much of what children are taught in the sciences amounts to abstractions. It's a shame, really -- concepts of the universe are so much easier to extrapolate when we can see them for ourselves. OLPC's looking to give the classrooms it serves more access to the very big and very small with two new attachments that we had the opportunity to check out on a recent visit to the company's Miami office. First off is a telescope that secures to the side of its XO-4 laptop with a vice grip, utilizing the device's built-in camera. There's also a microscope that sits atop a swiveling base and plugs directly into one of the laptop's USB ports. Both peripherals run on Fedora-based software designed by the company.

OLPC will be bringing these out as soon as it can get the price down through manufacturing. For the France-designed telescope, the company is aiming for $10, with a potentially lower price on the microscope. The idea is to get one of each in a classroom, rather than the one-to-one approach of its XO line.

Bodies of 2 U.S. crew found at Kyrgyzstan crash site

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan (AP) ? Search teams on Saturday found the bodies of two American crew members near where their military refueling plane crashed in the rugged mountains of Kyrgyzstan, while the third crew member was still missing, the emergencies minister of the Central Asian nation said.

The KC-135 plane crashed Friday afternoon about 100 miles (160 kilometers) west of the air base that the U.S. operates in Kyrgyzstan to support military operations in Afghanistan.

Officials at the U.S. Transit Center at the Manas base have released no information yet on the cause of the crash and could not immediately be reached on Saturday for any further information.

Emergencies Minister Kubatbek Boronov told The Associated Press that Kyrgyz search teams found the two fragmented bodies Saturday morning and they have not yet been identified. He said military officials from Manas were working with the Kyrgyz rescuers to search for the third crewman and the flight recorders.

Parts of the plane were scattered across a wide area near the village of Chaldovar. Some pieces, including the tail, came down on a grassy field bordered by mountains, but others landed in spots more difficult for search teams to reach.

One resident of the agricultural and sheep-grazing area, Sherikbek Turusbekov, told an AP reporter at the site on Friday that the plane exploded in flight and split into three pieces as it fell.

The plane was on a refueling mission for Afghanistan war operations at the time of the crash, a U.S. defense official in Washington said, speaking anonymously because he was not authorized to discuss the details of an ongoing investigation.

The U.S. base, which is adjacent to Manas International Airport outside Bishkek, the Kyrgyz capital, was established in late 2001 to support the international military campaign in Afghanistan. It functions as an interim point for troops going into or out of Afghanistan and as a home for the tanker planes that refuel warplanes in flight.

The Manas base has been the subject of a contentious dispute between the United States and its host nation.

In 2009, the U.S. reached an agreement with the Kyrgyz government to use it in return for $60 million a year. But the lease runs out in June 2014, and the U.S. wants to keep the base longer to aid in the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan. Kyrgyzstan is reluctant to extend the lease.

PFT: Garrard wants politics-free QB competition

Mark SanchezAP

NFL teams have different options when it comes to filling out the quarterback depth chart.? They can have an unquestioned starter and obvious backups, or they can throw the quarterbacks in a blender and see who earns the job.

Or they can pretend to have a clear-cut starter and undermine him with a backup who says he supports the starter but actually wants to take his job.

That?s what the Jets did last year by adding Tim Tebow to the team.? Even though Tebow tried to say and do all the right things on multiple occasions, he wanted to play.? Which means that he wanted Sanchez to not play.

On Thursday, Sanchez reflected on their relationship, making it clear that there was tension.

?If you were Tim?s agent or my agent, would you say that?s the absolutely best position for either of us?? Probably not,? Sanchez told reporters.? ?Tim wanted to play, I wanted to play, only one guy plays at this position.? So I guess it wasn?t the most advantageous, but that?s the way things happen. We both competed [with] our best, tried to be the best of friends we could, and honestly under different circumstances we would be really good friends, it?s just hard when you?re competing like that.? There?s just a professionalism about it that you don?t get too close to guys like that.? You?re just professional, and you?re cool and if the guy has a flat tire on the side of the road, I?m going to stop, I?m not just going to blow by him, but at the same time, I?m not sending him gifts on his birthday or anything.?

This year, the Jets have abandoned the fa?ade, embracing the notion that not just Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith but all five quarterbacks currently on the roster are competing.? Which means that Sanchez will view the rookie the same way he regarded Tebow.

?I don?t see why it would be any different,? Sanchez said.? ?I will help [Smith] out as much as I can, but when we have to compete, we have to compete, that?s the way it goes.?

Which means that the quarterback position will continue to display dysfunction, with five guys clamoring for one job.? While competition could make the guy who emerges from the scrum better, like so many quarterback controversies the guy who wins the job for Week One essentially becomes the guy who wins the privilege of being the first one to get benched.

That?s why the far better approach for any NFL team is to have a starter and obvious backups.? It keeps the locker room from picking sides, the media from stirring up trouble, and the fans from ripping their hair out.

Eventually, that could happen for the Jets, with Smith getting the job once he?s deemed ready to handle it.? Until then, the Jets will keep Sanchez and his guaranteed salary of $8.25 million around, because they?ll be paying him whether he?s on the team or not.

Which means that, essentially, the Jets have done a 180 from 2012.? Last year, they pretended there wasn?t a competition when in fact there really was one.? This year, the organization has launched a competition with an obvious preferred winner in mind.

Saturn's youthful appearance explained

Wednesday, May 1, 2013

As planets age they become darker and cooler. Saturn however is much brighter than expected for a planet of its age - a question that has puzzled scientists since the late sixties. New research published in the journal Nature Geoscience has revealed how Saturn keeps itself looking young and hot.

Researchers from the University of Exeter and the Ecole Normale Sup?rieure de Lyon found that layers of gas, generated by physical instability deep within the giant planet, prevent heat from escaping and have resulted in Saturn failing to cool down at the expected rate.

Professor Gilles Chabrier from Physics & Astronomy at the University of Exeter said: "Scientists have been wondering for years if Saturn was using an additional source of energy to look so bright but instead our calculations show that Saturn appears young because it can't cool down. Instead of heat being transported throughout the planet by large scale (convective) motions, as previously thought, it must be partly transferred by diffusion across different layers of gas inside Saturn. These separate layers effectively insulate the planet and prevent heat from radiating out efficiently. This keeps Saturn warm and bright."

Characterised by its distinctive rings, Saturn is one of the largest planets in our Solar System, second only in size to massive Jupiter. It is primarily made of hydrogen and helium and its excessive brightness has previously been attributed to helium rains, the result of helium failing to mix with Saturn's hydrogen rich atmosphere.

Layered convection, like that recently discovered in Saturn, has been observed in the Earth's oceans where warm, salty water lies beneath cool and less salty water. The denser, salty water prevents vertical currents forming between the different layers and so heat cannot be transported efficiently upwards.

These findings suggest that the interior structure, composition and thermal evolution of giant planets in our Solar System, and beyond, may be much more complex than previously thought.
